Trish Thompson

I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for 22 years. I work with individuals, couples and also facilitate group therapy. Experience tells me that clients want to feel comfortable and safe in opening up and talking about things they may not have shared with anyone else. I value the trust clients place in me and want them to know that I consider their wellbeing to be of the utmost importance. My goal is to work in partnership with my clients to assist them to live a life of their choosing, and to overcome barriers that come in the form of anxiety, depression, anger and low self worth.

While my training is based in client centred and emotion-focused practice, I feel that it is important to cater to the needs and strengths of my clients. This means that I might draw from a number of approaches, whether that be mindfulness based therapy or solution focused, for example. To me it is about helping clients to engage with their emotional and intuitive skills as well as developing more helpful thinking patterns.

I have worked in a number of settings over the years, including schools, community based organisations and in private practice. These experiences have allowed me to develop certain areas of interest and expertise. My work in schools saw me focus on areas such as anxiety, depression, bullying and learning issues. For many years I have worked with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities around issues that include sexuality, gender, trauma, anxiety and chronic health issues.

I have also been involved in the area of Family Violence for many years, as a facilitator of Men’s Behaviour Change programs, as well as counselling clients affected by family violence. I have a strong interest in relationships – not only the ones we have with our partners, but also with family members, friends and work colleagues. As a relationship counsellor my role is to support clients in developing better communication patterns that result in authentic and meaningful relationships with others.
